What Fixed Detection Does
Fixed gas detectors protect the facility and everyone in it - including workers who aren't wearing a portable. They run continuously, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Fixed detectors are positioned at strategic locations where gas releases are most likely: near process equipment, at grade level for heavier-than-air gases, at elevation for lighter-than-air gases, near ventilation intakes. Fixed detection can be integrated with building management systems, DCS, SCADA, fire and gas controllers, and emergency shutdown systems - enabling automated response before a human even knows there's a problem.
The Fixed Detector Market Share Signal
Fixed gas detectors accounted for 65% of the global gas detection equipment market by revenue in 2024 (Grand View Research, 2024). This reflects the industrial reality: continuous monitoring of fixed processes requires fixed equipment. The portable segment is growing, but for permanent industrial installations, fixed detection is the primary safety layer.
When You Need Both (Usually)
Most industrial facilities need both categories. A best-practice approach uses:
- Fixed detectors for continuous area monitoring at known release points
- Fixed detectors integrated with alarm management and emergency shutdown
- Portable detectors for personnel entering non-routine areas or performing maintenance

The Cost of Getting This Wrong
A fixed detector that isn't working doesn't alarm. A portable detector in a worker's pocket provides no warning if they're in an office when a release occurs in the process area. The distinction matters - and so does maintaining both systems properly.
